It's always exciting when something different comes along. And the Skateistan film project we just finished with up-and-coming British filmmaker, Coral Brown, and unimpeachable urban style manual, Highsnobiety, was certainly different. We engaged composer and former M83 collaborator Morgan Kibby, AKA White Sea, to create a bespoke piece to score the short, and the results were fantastic.

Skateistan is a remarkable NGO that works to improve the lives of young people in places where there just aren’t the same opportunities kids elsewhere might get. And how do they do that? With skateboards, of course.

Beginning life as a skate school founded in Kabul, the organisation also has a successful programme in Cambodia. Their schools help to empower the youth that use them – opening their eyes to the possibility for change, while keeping them off the streets at the same time. In 2016, Skateistan decided it was time to head to Johannesburg, South Africa – and Coral and High Snobiety helped to tell that story.

Director Coral wanted to show the project from the perspective of those who are most invested in it. The film is split into two parts, opening on a voiceover-led section about Daniel, one of the skaters-cum-educators working with young people on the streets of Jo’burg. This first section is focused on the transformative influence skating has had on Daniel's life, and how he’s paying that forward to the kids he works with at Skateistan.

Kibby's score is wonderful - it ebbs and flows beautifully throughout - it's the perfect accompaniment to this incredible film.

Zeal and Ardor's Devil is Fine comes in at the very end with a strong vocal to round things off.
