For almost twenty years, award-winning Irish composer Stephen Rennicks has been crafting inimitable soundtracks for the best of Independent Cinema and Television.
Rennicks scored ‘Room’ for Lenny Abrahamson, based on Emma Donoghue’s bestselling novel of the same name and starring Brie Larson, (who picked up the Oscar for Best Actress), Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H. Macy. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Abrahamson's first Oscar nomination for Best Director. The pair also worked together on the breakout cult-hit, ‘Frank’. A film with music at its heart, Rennicks’ stand-out songwriting, score and musical direction were unanimously praised. Rennicks won the award for Best Technical Achievement in Music at the British Independent Film Awards for his incredible work on the film, and the soundtrack, released on Silva Screen Records, was named number three in Mojo’s soundtrack albums that year. A more recent collaboration with Abrahamson produced 'The Little Stranger', starring Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Wilson and Charlotte Rampling. The film is a period mystery drama set in England in the immediate aftermath of the second world war.
Rennicks and Abrahamson have this year reunited for the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 'Normal People'. Barack Obama added Rooney’s novel to his 2019 list of "must reads” - and the twelve-part TV series is airing spring 2020 on Hulu and the BBC. The coming-of-age tale tells the story of two young people moving from adolescence to young adulthood, against the backdrop of Ireland during the global economic recession.
Among Rennicks’ other credits are 'Death of a Ladies Man', which will hit cinemas in fall 2020 - a feature about a carousing college professor (played by Gabriel Byrne) whose life becomes blighted by surreal hallucinations; Maya Zinshtein’s 'Forever Pure', an extraordinary feature-length documentary on the transfer of two Chechen Muslim soccer players to Israel’s Beitar Jerusalem FC; Spanish language film ‘Viva', directed by Paddy Breathnach and set in the crumbling beauty of Havana, Cuba, is an emotionally-charged drama about a hairdresser who is forced to quit performing at the local drag club by his boxer father; ‘Muse', a psych-thriller about an academic who slips into a world controlled by the ancient spirits of inspiration, the Muses; while ‘Birthmarked', starring Toni Collette, is an off-the-wall comedy about genetics, destiny and – ultimately – family.

When we were asked to find an existing track for this Beck's Sapphire Super Bowl spot, we had a sneaking suspicion that Chet Faker's incredible cover of No Diggity was going to grab all of the attention during that hugely important half time slot. Guess what, it did. Mission accomplished.

When Rattling Stick director Ed Morris asked Dirty Soup to help him create a track for his new spot for the Royal Navy, we knew only British music royalty would do, so we called Bernard Butler to ask him if he'd record an original track for the campaign. As you can see from the film, the partnership between Ed and Bernard proved to be pretty dynamic.

We music supervised Sebastian Strasser's latest BMW campaign. Having previously worked with Seb on his spectacular 'Audi Mechanics' spot, we knew the score had to be anything but ordinary – that’s why we brought in the Swedish musical wizard, Tobias Norberg, AKA Marshman, to compose an original track for Seb's director's cut. The result, a breathtaking vocal-soaked assault on the ears.

We’re thrilled to have provided the music and sound-design for BBDO Duesseldorf's new campaign to celebrate the launch of Porsche’s new Formula E Racing Car.
Once we’d agreed the music brief with Anorak's Parisian directing duo, Truman & Cooper, we immediately knew who to bring in to score the campaign. Step forward Los Angeles-based composer, Aska Matsumiya. We’ve wanted to work with Aska since hearing her spellbinding work on movies, The Wolf Pack and Skate Kitchen.
We also engaged Dirty Soup’s Emmy-nominated sound designer, Steve Fanagan. We first encountered Steve’s prodigious talents when we worked together on the musically-driven movie, Frank, and the Oscar-winning, Room.

Dirty Soup adds some sparkle to the latest campaign by Tiffany & Co.
When Ogilvy & Mather NYC asked us to score a collection of commercials for the world-famous jewelry store, Tiffany & Co, we couldn’t have been more up for the task ahead. The brief was to score instantly identifiable, timeless arrangements that could work with any classical instrumental line-up. We engaged top composer and session musician, Nikolaj Torp Larsen. Nikolaj has played with some of the biggest names in music. From contemporary artists such as Adele, Mark Ronson, Florence And The Machine and Lana Del Rey - and regularly playing sessions for the super heavyweight, Academy Award-winning producer, Paul Epworth, as well as lending his unique musical style to legendary artists such as The Specials, Klaus Voormann and Yusuf Islam – Nikolaj is a musical force in his own right. We were in no doubt he would deliver a timeless score to round off what was a truly beautiful campaign to work on.

Radical Media, Berlin asked us to help sort the music for Sebastian Strasser's latest Audi spot.
It was easy to see from the storyboard that we were going to need an epic score to back up Sebastian’s epic creative vision. So we brought in the genius LA-based composer, Robert Cairns to flex his muscle. And never ones to go half way, we flew out to LA to record the drums with the mighty Carla Azar (Autolux/Jack White), while the masterful Gus Seffert (Beck/Black Keys) took on the synth and bass duties to complete what was one hell of a ride.

Dirty Soup joined forces with JWT and the superstar director Jake Nava to create two very special tracks for the British Army’s 2014 and 2015 advertising campaigns.
When we say Jake's a big deal, we really do mean big. He's worked on music videos for artists including Beyonce and the Rolling Stones and directed advertising campaigns for the likes of Armani, Puma, Diet Coke, Bacardi and HSBC.
The story behind the spots was 'More Than Meets The Eye', so we knew we had to find a very special composer to score the music – someone not only talented, but capable of bringing something unexpected to the mix. That’s why we asked Faith SFX, one of the worlds greatest beatboxers to work his magic by recording the tracks by using only his unbelievable, all-natural skills. The combination of his vocal-only approach and Jake’s powerful visuals created something truly special. The results – as you can hear, well they're pretty astonishing!

Directed by Emmy-award winning journalist, Alexandra Dean, produced by Adam Haggiag, and executive produced by Susan Sarandon, Bombshell tells the true story of Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr. Known for her matchless beauty and electrifying screen persona, few of Lamarr’s fans knew she possessed such an incredible mind. Dean’s exploration reveals how the actress was not only an onscreen talent, but also one of the world's greatest scientific innovators. You see, Lamarr is credited as an inventor of secure Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS – a fact virtually nobody knows. Using never before heard recordings, this film documents Lamarr’s remarkable story in her own words.
Los Angeles-based composer duo, Keegan Dewitt and Jeremy Bullock, were brought in to take on the score. They crafted an elegant and understated musical backdrop to help tell the story of Hedy’s wild and totally original life.
Music supervising this project was an inspirational process. It marked our first creative collaboration with NYC based supervisor, Karl Westman. Karl’s knowledge and understanding of music was a joy to work alongside.
Bombshell hit US cinema screens on Friday 24th November, and will open in the UK on 8 March 2018.
Write When You Get Work, directed by Stacy Cochran, is an off-kilter crime flick set in New York City at a private school for girls. It stars Emily Mortimer, Rachel Keller and Finn Wittrock.
The story behind the score for this movie involves a hefty dose of good fortune and equal measures of goodwill. Step forward Blur frontman, Gorillaz creator, and all-around musical genius, Damon Albarn. Cochran contacted Mr Albarn directly and asked him if he would give her access to the stem-files to his majestic solo album, Everyday Robots. After reading the script, of course, he said yes. Cochran then went to work with her music editor, Suzana Peric, to rework the tracks to picture. The result is one of the most engaging scores we’ve heard in some time.
Two time Academy Award-winning cinematographer, Robert Elswit, shot the movie. You’ll have seen his incredible work on Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Good Night, and Good Luck, and There Will Be Blood.
As well as exec-producing the movie, Dirty Soup’s Raife Burchell also helped source a bunch of stunning tracks for key scenes in the film. The pulsating, True by Junk Son – can be heard throughout the movie, as well as on the trailer (see below). The track perfectly captures the mood of the film and sits effortlessly alongside Albarn’s score. He also placed a thumper of a track by one of his favourite artists, PAULi – who has (coincidentally) previously collaborated with Albarn, playing the drums on, wait for it, Everyday Robots.
You’ll be able to catch Write When You Get Work in cinemas in the US on November 30th – and it will get its European release early next year.
18 bikes, 3 weeks and miles of tarmac saw Honda travel to Slovenia using the beauty of the Alps to frame Honda’s new collection and capture the spirit of Honda’s exciting new collection of motorbikes... and we sorted the music.
With decidedly different vibes to the three spots we were asked to work on, we worked hard to find the perfect tune for each one. Eventually we settled on I Got A Thing by Hanni El Khatib and Brice Davoli's hypnotic Luna Mia Cara for spots one and two. We decided to go for a different approach for the final spot, so we commissioned Maxwell Scott to compose an original track.

The Song Of Sway Lake is a romantic drama about the vanished grace of America and the spell cast by lost time. The story centres on a young man’s plot to steal a valuable jazz record from his grandmother’s lake house that is derailed when his accomplice falls for the matriarch.
We brought in The Staves and John Grant, past 'Dirty Soup Presents' live session guests of ours, to perform on two pivotal songs that are central to the film's storyline. We also engaged Grammy-winning record producer, Flood, to mix the tracks.
The film was directed by student Academy Award-Winner, Ari Gold, and stars Tony- and Emmy-nominee Mary-Beth Peil, Rory Culkin and Robert Sheehan.
Having recently performed big at the Vancouver Film Festival, winning Best Film, with Mary-Beth Peil taking home the statue for Best Actress, the film is now showing nationwide across the US.
We were contacted by the Swiss directing duo, sisters Kim and Florine Nüesh, requesting for Stephen Rennicks to score their short film Forget Me Not. They were blown away by his score for the multi-Oscar-nominated film, Room - they felt he was the perfect composer to tell their story. On reading their wonderfully crafted script, Stephen immediately agreed to collaborate with Kim and Florine, and the results have been fantastic.
Set in the 1970s the film centres around two young girls who struggle with their mother’s bipolar disease – a condition that disrupts their lives and burdens them to grow up early. This semi-autobiographical film tells the story about the relationship between mothers and daughters and how caring roles within families are often interchangeable.
Since wrapping production Forget Me Not has previewed at a number of globally recognised film festivals, and Kim and Florine were awarded a 'Young Director Award' for their short at the 2018 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity.

We were thrilled to have been asked to help find musical talent for ‘What If’, a short film directed by STREETDANCE duo Max and Dania, produced by Vertigo Films and commissioned by BBC Films and Film Four as part of the 2012 London Film Festival programme. 'What if’ is a rendering of Rudyard Kipling’s much loved poem If; and tells the story of Joe (George Sargeant), a young teen, who learns, through an older, wiser man, played by Noel Clarke, the fundamental life lessons on nobility, patience and generosity; lessons on how to become an admirable young man.
